Due to the recent Hurricanes down here in Louisiana, there is tons of Pecan trees that are down. I have never used pecan, just hickory but I hear that they are very similar. What is the best way to go about getting some of this wood to use for smoking? Usually I just buy it from academy, in the chunks. I can figure out the size and everything, but what about the bark? Do I leave it on or take it off somehow? Also about how long do I need to let it sit before I use it? Any advice is appreciated.

we got tons of trees down here in PA also.so far i have scored 3 oaks and a cherry. i could literally get a semi full if i had one, people are giving wood away left and right, go out and get all ya need.you'll need to season it so you won't be able to use it probobly till next summer if ya split it now, heck if ya can get a ton ya might be able to even turn a profit, we don't have to many if any pecan trees up here and they don't even sell it in a store anywhere around here

Some people skin the bark off some don't. In the heat of the south it doesn't take near as long to dry wood as it does in the north. The smaller chunks will also dry faster. When you think it is dry burn a piece and see if any liquids boil out of the ends thats the best way I know to tell for sure.
