please don't get angry at this trhread. this a serious question.

I live ina city suburb, still pretty urban though.
we do have a liscence in our city that you can keep a vietmese pot belly pig as long as you keep it clean, odor free ,and the city doesn't get complaints from the neighbors.

My roots are quite rural, my grandfather was a subsistance pig farmer and an avid smoker. The old out house was converted into the smoke house when they got indoor plumbing in 1960.

I want to know if a pig is a pig is a pig. and if I raise the little porker and don't get attached like a pet, if it would be something edible.

plus an advantage I see with the pot belly pig is extra bacon, and who doesn't like extra bacon?

please don't hate me, all meat comes from somewhere.

I don't know much about pigs, but if your neighbors see you butcher your pet in the backyard, they might complain... If I were your neighbor, I would complain, but only if you did not share.biggrin.gif

Feed the future bacon and ribs good, healthy stuff, then butcher the little porker in your garage in the middle of the night so no one sees ya!

My father in law went to a pig pickin where they cooked a whole pot bellied pig. Beware, he said it is extremely greasy.

Apparently, the all drank too much and fell asleep. The cooker was beside a big ditch with water in it, and apparently tons of grease ran into the ditch. Then, of course, it somehow managed to catch fire, so they had fire on the water. No damage though.

Said the taste was rather bland, and it was extremely fatty.

I say give it a try. And don't worry, I won't call the cops unless you cook my dog, you can do what you want with yours.

Course, my dogs name is pig.........

I'm don't know much about those pigs but, I would assume that you would be buying a domesticated breed. Animals that are for domestication are built a little different than your standard pig. Meaning it will either not have much meat and alot of fat or meats flavor will be off. Pigs just like any other animal that is raised for food are bread to be the best type of food. Were domesticated animals are bread for other quality's. Hey give it a shot and take one for the team. Like everyone else says don't let the neighbors see ya cuz ya never know what people will do.

yea, from what I see pigs are self marinaders..give em good bourbon to wash down sweet corn, culantro, peppers and garlic..
should be good eats..if you need intructions on "doing him in" I am sure you will get a lot of help on this forum also.

I was doing some pig care research, and I came across something called a kurobuto pig, It was a european black pig gifted to japan sometime in the 1800's basically it is raised like a kobe cow, happy stress free life with beer and good quality food.
I am an avid beer brewer, so I am thinking of remashing my spent grains so they have a little alcohol, less than 2% and using that as 50% of my feed then the remainder would be crushed corn and wheat. I would be living with the beasty so I would be nice to him, and give a stress free life.
my wife says when it is time for the "special day" I won't be able to separate in my mind that it was a companion. I say BBQ is a powerful mistress and she like pork.

What a man butchers in his own house is his own bussiness.... I would make it at night and with the door closed. The potbelly pigs have a different texture and the meat is fatty and tough so as i rembericon_rolleyes.gif but what the heck I know some people that eat dog eek.gif raise them and eat them it is all what ya get used to...I got some back country friends that take a deer when they need meat..no mater what time of year. John law looks the other way, there quite a few indians here in Ok and has been going on before Ok was a state. Im not saying it is right im just saying it happens.

I, too, grew up on farm (hogs actually) and have been in the suburbs so I find this idea very interesting. Keep us posted.

I can tell you from having showed 4-H hogs 10 yrs that I only got attached to my 4-H hog once when I was about 8. He was literally a pet that first year. But after I got the $$$ from the 4-H auction, I was able to get over it quite nicely in later years. biggrin.gif

I ate some pot belly pig once, it was great. Go for it... Just don't get the neighborhood kids loving on it so you don't have to explain once it's not around anymore. icon_cry.gif

If you decide to kill it and process it in your backyard, who cares what your neighbors think. You're not doing anything illegal or unethical. American culture tells us we have to be oh so very careful not to offend anyone. So we go the extra mile to make sure we don't tick liberals off. icon_rolleyes.gif Don't waste your time pleasing people you don't like. PDT_Armataz_01_17.gif The ones that care don't matter, and the ones that matter don't care.

Now that I got that out....I can't wait to see the q-view. Hurry up and fatten that thing up. biggrin.gif

would the neighbors really know the difference between a pot belly pig and a normal one if you didn't take it for walks for all to see??? Might try raising a regular pig, what's the worse that will happen???
