Rubbed ribs: basting also or no?

Doing spare ribs...'grilling' them and the boys from BBQweb.com also use a basting (Mop & Dipping) sauce and baste several times during the cook....

Smoking them, the only time you add any baste is during the #2 foil in the 3-2-1 method?
One says apple juice, pinkmeat used BEER...how much do you soak the ribs during this #2 proccess??

Does anyone use BBQ sauce at this time??? or at least that runny 'mop & dip' sauce the BBQ boys do?

Or save the 'mop & dipping' sauce for the last #3 step?

I'm doing 2 racks tomorrow (SUN) so maybe I'll do 2 different things to each and experiment...

And does anyone use the MUSTARD first then RUB method for rubbing?

Typically, you add a bit of yer liquid to the foiled ribs and leave 'em alone till unfoil. I mop them with my mop sauce after the rub has "set". right thru to foil...if I DID foil, which I don't always do. Depends on the ribs.

Never sauce...typically too much sugar and it will burn. The mop or whatever sure... as long as the sugar content is low.
Or even the BBQ sauce, if ya desire... LATE in step 3.
I ALWAYS rub with mustard, as many here do. You will find with experience the 3-2-1 is a guideline, not an absolute. As you gain expertise, you'll be able to "feel and look" and know when these steps should be done.

BTW... rub is not "rubbed" on... kinda a misnomer there..it's sprinkled and perhaps patted...

RGR that....I didn't like when I saw those BBQ boys working it in and making a MESS of the rub...so I pretty much was going to do just as you said.

about 1/2 hr before I take 'em off - I like to give them a brush of 1/2 honey and 1/2 BBQ sauce.

Obviously - I like them sweet! Gives them a great appearance too!

i spritz them regularly during the 3-hour smoke.....usually apple juice/vinegar/water/bourbon, occasionally dr. pepper....pretty much every time i open the door to add more wood, etc.....say twice an hour?

bought a cheap spray bottle from home depot....
