Sorry guys and gals,

The Web Gods have spoken and I'm not allowed to trade any more alder for pecan wood, or help send alder rounds to people who are unfortunate enough to get any for themselves local. So Sorry, I was happy to help out those I could.

The web gods and super moderators have spoken, summed up here:

Monty Super Moderator says:

My response to the Web Gods:

Wow, I have been a contributing member of the SMF with recipes and Que View, and simply posted an ad to help people out sending them alder wood if they can't find it at Wally World, I started this all to trade members alder for pecan wood, so how is that a commercial venture? I simply can't get pecan in seattle, and many people in Texas or florida can't get alder. People said "I don't have pecan, but can I buy some alder off of you?" Right now there are other "wood for sale" ads in the Classifieds, are you going to delete them too?

I don't sell wood on ebay, or craigslist, or other venue. So as you say "I'm lining my pocket with money", wow, hardly.

If guys can't trade wood for wood, how is that a commercial biz?

LOOK AT ALL MY OTHER POSTS showing TONS OF QUE VIEW! and sharing salmon tips and crabs and scallops. That is a contributing member, not someone who is just selling wood and whoring out your site without giving anything back.

Trust me, I'm only helping people out and trying to getting pecan wood in exchange. You don't want me posting anymore about helping other people out with wood, recipe tips, or suggestions?

I'm really puzzled Monty. really I am.

your website, your rules, Fine, you're just hurting your own membership.

Prime example here, me wanting to get some Pecan from this guy.

Dave in Seattle. Sorry guys, I was just trying to help. wow, I'm sorta in shock here?

I'm interested in any feedback to this post, I sure wasn't in it for commercial interest as you can tell.....do a search on my name HeapOmeat, and you tell me if I'm not a contributing member of the SMF clan.

My gut tells me there was a complaint or at minimum a heads up PM to a moderator on this subject.

Then my gut goes on by saying there was an exchange of PM's between moderators and the domain owner and they felt it needed to be addressed.

I am assuming you were not singled out but honed in on more by mere chance. (How many other members receive PM's like this that we do not know about???)

Don't take the PM from Monty personally, he is just following through with his job title duties.

You ARE a good contributing member; it also appears you are a good contributing member that will have to work harder at acquiring Pecan !!!

I tend to get uptight when things are directed at me also, but find that if I give it a day or two, generally it does not seem to be as big of a deal as I originally thought it was.

Anyways, that is just my 2 cents on it..... Smoke On !!!

Dave:

I think Monty tried to be very fair and professional about this by handling this in a private message. I'm sorry you felt the need to stir the pot in an attempt to rile people up.

No one has any issue with you trading alder for pecan. The issue is with you selling alder, crab or whatever else. I think he stated that quite clearly in the e-mail.

You reference the fact in your posts that you are unemployed and getting by on a meager cash flow. While I am sorry for your unfortunate circumstance you do regularly, not just once, offer your wood for sale which is prohibited by Jeff.

The issue was discussed among the moderators as well as with Jeff.

Again, no one has an issues with trading wood, it is the FOR sale aspect which if anyone reads all the prior posts on this topic you can see.

From one of your posts:

"Wow, Thanks all to my repeat customers for the alder wood."

Stick to trading and you're fine.

I trade wood all the time. And if a private transaction is made between 2 people, I'm sure THAT would not be an issue. Get a website and ask to post a link here if it's for profit.

Many forums I enjoy have a section "Business Card" Where members can post links to thier business's. I have done business this way and it can really be a good way for members to support members. Such a section could be good here.
Of course it is Jeff's site and he will do what he wants with it, we as members can accept it or leave.

Nah, I'm not one to stir the pot, unless I've got a dozen dungeness crab boiling in it.

And if by me mentioning "repeat customers", yeah I sold people all of 6-7 boxes of wood (who didn't have pecan to trade), all at the huge net profit of maybe $40 to me for hours of labor and expenses taking it to the post office.

I'm also a contributiing member on other boards where they don't allow people to post classifieds till they've made 100 posts, maybe that would work here too.

If people want some alder wood, PM me. On second thought, nah, it's not really worth my time to cut it up, box the wood, take it to the post office for 30-40 minutes of my time for $5-6 "profit lining my pockets".

too funny really, I was just helping people out who can't get alder.

The world is now a much better and safer place.

I may be stepping on a hornets nest here but then again, I really don't care.

I've purchased wood from Heap recently, the reason being I cannot find a reliable source for anything other than hickory or mesquite in my area. Sure, I could have purchased it somewhere else, but I figured I'd deal with someone that is part of the same community as me and if he's making a buck in the process then good for him.

What I suggest, is setup a section where people can request wood. A "wanted" section. Then let those people lucky enough to have access respond. Keep it off the forum by using PM or personal email if necessary.

Again, just a suggestion, but I'm sure there are lots of people in the same situation that I'm in that have come to rely on people like Dave for wood. Don't take that away from us.

Thanks guys all for your support via replies and PM's.

Mods, there are some good ideas being presented. I'm still looking for Pecan wood, a "Wood Wanted" forum section would be great!

Maybe I need to go straight to TV commercials and better marketing to obtain total world domination one box of wood at a time?

Lets see, marketing ideas marketing slogans,

"Alder, it's not just for smoking anymore, you can use it for furniture too!"
"Alder, less acrid, tastes great!"
"Alder, drink it responsibly"
"Alder, you get 8 pounds of wood for the incredible low price of $10…but wait, there's more! The next 20 callers get a free pack of matches with their order"

The first Ginsu Knife commercials aired in 1978, it began with a dramatic voice: “In Japan, the hand can be used as a knife†with a man in a white karate uniform splitting a stack of wooden boards with his hand. “But this method doesnâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t work with a tomato;†the voice over continues and the scene changes to show a hand smashing a tomato into a pulpy mess; which is where the Ginsu knife came in. It could “cut through a nail, a tin can, and a radiator hose and still cut a tomato paper thin,†touting the knives' ability to stay razor sharp even after having been put to the test.

Viewers were then ‘called to actionâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji] with such phrases as “you get this all for the incredible low price of…,†“Now how much would you pay?†as well as one of the most legendary and well known phrases “But wait! Thereâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s moreâ€

Grins,

dave "pecanless in seattle"

Now Rob, did you dig to the bottom of the box of wood yet, like a kid going for the prize in a box of breakfast cereal? You SURE you didn't get a magical free prize in the box of alder?
icon_rolleyes.gif

Actually, thats a pretty good idea, a FREE prize included in my now FREE wood (cuz I can't sell it here anymore) your free prize might be a leaf, a spider or neat bug to chase your wife with, maybe a free book of matches, free used packing tape slightly not-so-sticky after being used to seal your box, free used ink used to write your name with on the box. Man my profit margins are taking a hit. There go the second quarter earnings, the stock holders are going to be pissed.

My group of 20 mexican and cuban illegals have been slaving all night in order to meet growing and expanding market demands. I'm at 3 shifts of operation in my expansive neon sign lit warehouse having them use dull butter knifes to carve down whole trees of alder into small smoker sized rounds. Juan had to leave early yesterday to pick up the swimmers off the beach after their boat broke down. But thank god they made it to shore after the boat ride from Cuba (heck that's a long float to seattle)

I'm down to 2068 boxes of alder left in stock. I'm having a going out of business fire sale, (now THAT is a funny joke right there....a fire sale.......smoking meat wood...........oh never mind.....grins) Can't be a real sale though, as the wood is now all FREEEEEEE.

PM me for a box of wood, or the kitten gets tortured.

Now that you mention it I DID get a spider in the box when I opened it. Was that the special 1000th customer prize??? Sweeeeet!!!

Anyway, back to some semblance of seriousness, seriously! I think a "Wanted" section would be beneficial not even specifically for wood just anything in general. Could be for purchasing things from other people or simply for finding sites for stuff that you may not know of otherwise.

Well, Dave, since you have decided to take this into the public forum I will address all the pertinent points.

First: this is site is not for any sort of monetary return to its members and must not be used in any way for personal gain.

Second: the Classified section is for one time only sales. Not for repetitive sales.

Third: Swapping is fine! Cost of postage is fine. But we will not condone any for profit posts on our site. The line has to be drawn somewhere and that is where the line is drawn and that is where it will stay.

Furthermore, I consider public posting of our "Private Messages" a form of pot stirring. Obviously you are not willing to accept the rules of the SMF Forums.

I am going to close this thread leaving it open to all to review. Please do not open any companion threads. We have more to discuss on the site than this minor distraction which has been taken totally beyond where it should be.
