brand new to smoking, actually never have even once before.....have done alot of grilling on a propane grill, but i have been listening to the Maxim channel on the satellite radio and they talk BBQ alot and because of it i picked up Steven Raichelen's The Barbecue Bible.....well that planted the seed.....and well i ran across this at a garage sale for $50:

so i think im on my way

a bit about me.....im 26, married, have two stepdaughters(10 and 13), a 3 year old schipperke named Bear thats our third kid....the wife and i run the local weekly newspaper which we hope to be buying in the next couple of years.....i do alot of gardening both indoors and out, inside mainly consists of carnivorous plants and orchids.....outdoors, well as the wife puts it, im turning our yard into a mini orchard....have been planting about any fruit i can get my hands on that i think has a chance living through our bitterly cold winters.

the wife and i hunt and fish whenever we get a chance...hunt mainly for mule deer but elk, speed goats, birds, varmints and anything else are targeted on occasion....mainly fish for walleye but now that i have a smoker i guess ill have to try fishing deep for lake trout.....we are starting to take up bow hunting just for the hell of it(living in the middle of nowhere means finding ways to entertain yourself) and the oldest of my stepdaughters will be rifle hunting for the first time this year.....

also starting to do some home brewing, have some apple wine bottled now, a sweet mead in the fermenter and will likely be brewing a braggot shortly....

thats about it......

You've got a perfect set-up to do some great smokin' plus an amazing opportunity to get some wild game! I doubt you can find a type or style of Q'ing or type of meat that someone on this forum doesn't have experience with.

I don't know much about offset smokers like yours but I've seen lots of users here. So jump in and ask lots of questions and let us know what you're smokin'. I'm learning something everyday.

Welcome to the SMF and Happy Smokin' from Oregon!!

Sounds like you have some awsome resources for game meat. I've done some home brewing myself (beer). Great hobby. What's Braggot?
Welcome aboard

Welcome Rattler, you're in the right place to learn about smokin....I have a Brinkman SnP offset but mine looks very cheap next to yours. I'll send some pics and maybe somebody can tell me.

thanks........after a couple hours reading i have discovered i lucked out cause my SNP is the old style thats made from heavier gage steel and i need to make some simple mods to it......glad i ran across this site.......the mods look like they could get rid of some headaches i might of had otherwise

Hello, Welcome and happy smoke rings from Sedalia, MO. If you have any questions about Lake Trout in Ft. Peck, MT and smoking them. There is some really good smokers around Ft. Peck. I love to prairie dog shoot and fish around there. There are also a lot of paddlefish. Semper Fi.

yeah Fort Peck is bout 40 miles down the road.....fish there alot, was in a walleye tourny over there with a buddy about a month or so ago, didnt come close to the money but did better than i expected....never fished for paddlefish myself but have went with buddies.....lots of work.....intend on setting up a bow and trying to bowfish for one in the Dredge Cuts.....that looks a lil bit easier, if lower success rate.....really want to get one as im told the meat is excellent......also wondering if sturgeon would be decent....when i fish the river i occasionally pull up a 3 to 4 foot shovelnose that i just toss back.....

welcome to smf.....I could dote on these folks for hrs on end....they have helped me tremendously......hope you can gain as much from em as I have....welcome....................Ty

Wolf Point has some big Bee Keepers and you should be able to buy Honey. I expect to see some receipes for "Smoked Prairie Dogs?" ; especially the microwave receipes. I really like shooting them. Lots of sheep and Pronghorns up there also. I bet you can get a lamb butchered easy in Glascow, MT. Lots of deer in that Milk River valley. Should be some pheasants also; so you'll need to brush up on "Beer Can Smoking Birds?" Advice is not to do a Sage Hen first. Happy Smoke Rings from Sedalia, MO.
