Most likely it is a lined barrel. Even though it contained a food product they would have wanted to protect the product from the barrel materials.

Yup - Burn it hot.
 
The inside will be any color other than metal / rust. Both of mine were a tan color.
 
I did ... it gives the fire oxygen to burn better. With out air for the burn out the fire most likely will go out when the bottom of the barrel runs out of oxygen.
 
If that is the case I would wire brush it out good. Finish up all the necessary holes and hardware and season it.

I would. And if you really want a good fire, put a leaf blower (or a shop vac set to blow) up against the intake when your fire is going. But it might be best to do it at night....when it glows orange, shut it down.
 
hoping to do the burn out this weekend........but i also have to get tents aired out, and camping stuff together for the gathering.......so will see
 
It's Friday Dude.. burn it tonight. Set up the tents tomorrow.
