Wondering if this would work as a simple ash - removal system for a U.D.S. ? Noticed on some of BBQ Bubba's old posts ( yes , researching a build !

) the handle for the charcoal basket and wondered if you could put an ash pan below atatched by some rods that extend up the sides for easy lift out. ???

I suppose. Have to clear all the rack mounting hardware of course.

Honestly I dunno why the bottom is not just cut out too, and set the barrel "tube" over the wood/charcoal basket-base plate. Lift off "tube" when finished and dump ash.

Might be some air leak issues..possibly need a sealing flange on the "tube" I guess.

Rich is correct, need to be smaller to clear the grate bolts but a good idea!

Rich, guys have done that with the drum upside down and removing the bottom and getting a doner lid or a Weber lid....
Some have leaked and some have made it work!

Hmm something to ponder anyway. Hey...don't some drums have a thumbscrew tightened band at the top to remove the lid? That would be good for the bottom release eh? Seal it up and easy release to clean.

I've been contemplating a similar set up for my UDS. Actually I'm just trying to find the right thing to use to fit under my charcoal basket. My basket is 17" in diameter so I'm going to make the "catch" 18 or 19 inches. I've done all the measuring... just trying to find something to make one.
