great question friend, personly i just placed a new thermometer in my homemade smoker, i used a probe type ( round base with an aluminun rod that comes to a point) the thing is that is has the actulal degrees on it instead of the different meat doneness, i like this better because it showes actuall numbered temps. i found it at FREDS for $6.99. works great

Any thermometer is a good thermometer.
There is a lot different brands and styles out there and each have there own personal preference.

Thermometers are usually a "you get what you pay for" Item.

Popular brands
Oregon Scientific

Welcome. you will get probably get several differant brands here. I myself have several brands Maverick, Taylor are my favs. but I have not had any trouble with any. You probably want a digital probe type. some even have remote units that you can take in the house when it is cold outside. my maverick ET-73 as remote capabilities as well as having a double probe so you can monitor the meat and the smoker temp at the same time. Best advise is to spend a little bit( you can pick up a taylor at Lowes for about $20. or cheaper when on sale.) some of my units I paid $30 to $50 for.
Just be sure to test it with boiling water to check how accurate you can also use 32 deg water. It is nice if you have one that you can calibrate

I have a Tel-Tru (dial) thermometer built into my smoker. I also use a DigiQII (digital probe thermometer & temperature controler).

The idea is to find something that you trust.

I'd recommend that you calibrate whatever you are using (most folks use boiling water).

Being new and just starting , I went in search of a digital thermo. I thought they all would read the meat temps as well as the cooker temps. I was mistaken , a lot are just meat thermos and they top out around 200* F . I kept the first one (weekend warrior) for meat temps , but found the charmglow at Home Dumpo from a post here. So far so good and I like the remote feture.

i bought this one at walmart a couple of months back at walmart and its pretty nice cause i can carry it w/ me if i go inside or fall asleep in the recliner, haha. i like if it goes off i have it right there and can hear it, instead of it being outside and possibly miss it going off.

it wasn't all that expensive either. the only downfall is the base and unit both take 2 AAA batteries.
