smokin in Western NC

Hello! Been lurking for a while and decided to join. I've been smoking for a few years, but I lived in downtown San Francisco with no yard, just a small concrete patio, and the only practical thing I could use was the cheapo Brinkman electric smoker. I've had great results with that, pork shoulder, ribs, turkeys, chickens, salmon, beans, you name it. Now we moved to the mountains of western NC, 11 wooded acres, and my husband is ready to build me a new smoker...not sure what route I want to take, he is thinking brick, I'm thinking something more portable....any ideas?

Getting ready to put a turkey and some sausage on today! Will try some ABTs for the first time too. We'll enjoy that tonight with a couple Sierra Nevadas (our beer of the month, got to love the Kegerator!) and then some pickin on the porch, me on banjo, him on guitar.

Looking forward to trading recipes and techniques with everyone. My next big goal is a whole pig...problem is we don't know enough people out here yet to have a party worthy of it!

I'm only 6 hours away, I think it'll be worth it.

It's good to see more N. Carolinians on here, even if they are from the wrong end of the state.

You'll be looked at somewhat strange on that end wanting to cook a whole hog for bbq, whereas on my end it's the norm.

But, all Q is good Q. Welcome aboard.

Wow! Talk about culture shock .... for downtown San Fran to 11 acres in the mountains of NC. Hope you like it. As for the smoker, it's all a personal choice. If you want portability, then that's one direction. But if now then that's a whole other direction. Either way, you'll be fine .... why not have both? Anyway, welcome aboard and look forward to your posts.

Miss Mechante, welcome to the Forum. Hope you like what the South has to offer; one item of note is the eastern-side-of-the-state vinegar based sauce for pork barbecue. You'll discover a great change from the sometimes cloyingly sweet western (side-of-the-state) tomato based sauces. Carolina pulled pork barbecue cannot be beat, and you are in the home state that makes it famous! If you get a chance, head on up past Sanford, Raleigh and Roanoke Rapids into southern Virginia for some real good local peanut-fed hogs that smoke up awesome.

Welcome to the forum. A ton of great people here with alot of smokin knowledge. As far as the smoker goes, it all depends on what you wish to do with it. Small meals, large meals, party meals, cold smoke. Just something to think about.

Welcome to SMF, Lady. NC is a beautiful state. I have a brother in Kernersville and a sister in Greenville. Rode my harley on Tail of the dragon a couple years ago. Real nice ride. Now get that new smoker going and post up the Q-view.
