i am thinking of buying a smoker. i am like the guy on hogans hero's who said ... i know nothing i hear nothing i see nothing .... wrt smoking. i am a virgin so be gentle.

which kind should i buy?

i dont want a rolls royce of smokers as it would not be appropriate for me.

i am single an live alone. i dont eat a whole lot. a versital middle of the road smoker would do me well. one that i can add the stuff i need as i go. one that i can modify to its best advantage.

anyhooo..... nice to meet all a yas.

btw i go by pi but i had to add more to my nic.

You will learn alot of stuff here about all the different types of smokers. Everyone here has their favorite. Myself I use charcoal or wood. I like to punish myself!

I happen to like the flavor of wood smoked foods.

Like geob said, decide what ya want to fuel the smoker with first. Then decide how mych time you want to dedicate to the craft. And last but certainly not the least important, how much money do you want to spend.

Do a search on the forums for"electric, or wood, or propane, or charcoal" smokers. Jeff has devided them into seperate places for folks to talk about their specific types. Don't be too hasty to go out and buy something without a couple days worth of reading, and deliberation.

I will warn you, this site, and the art of real Q can be very addictive.
Check out the 5-day ecourse, it will help you with your decision also.

Good luck with your decision, and welcome to the best site around when it comes to smoked foods!

Welcome from another newbie I bought a GOSM gas since I thought it would be easier to maintain temps while getting started. Don't know if I was right or not but I have done my seasoning and 1 smoke and its been great so far.

Welcome Pi!

I have an electric Brinkmann Gourmet smoker, or as I have seen it referred to here - El Cheapo Brinkmann...

Went with electric because I live in an apartment complex and when I don't feel like hauling it up to the park, I can still get away with using it on my balcony.

Also at under $60, it was the right price to jump in to a hobby that up until 2 weeks ago, I knew nothing about.

Good luck with your research. Let us know what you decide!

Regards,
Paul

welcome! i just left savannah, a fw months ago. moved up here to pa. my wife and ihad a bbq place there in coffee bluff.
i agree with the rest, read and study, and first determine what you want to use the smoker for, then you can best narrow down the choices.

Curious if any of our current or former Savannah residents have eaten at Old Timey Town BBQ??

Welcome to the forum!!

i have a chargriller pro with sfb. im not sure how difficult that is compared to others, thats just the type of grill that i have grown up with. i bought mine already assembled and for about 140. hope this helps.

i always have and always will recommend the ebc gourmet........nice entry level price......low learning curve.........get good on one of these......then move up to the sfb........to me......even after couple decades of using ecb's, the sfb learning curve is almost daunting..........as i am finding out........LOL

Welcome to the SMF, plenty of friendly members who are willing to share good times. Take a little time in researching for your smoker... just remember that most folks upgrade/change smokers in time.
