As some of you know I'm building my own smoker out of an old propane tank. I just wanted to give you all some updates, no pics yet, will get some as soon as I make some. Anyway, just cut out the end of my smoker for my fire box to go in.
So far this is what I have:
a propane tank (free)
temp guages, handles, hinges, and vents: $200
10ft trailer (free)
All my metal I need $175

A 10 ft trailer, that must a huge smoker, can't wait to see the pics.
Andy.

Sounds like fun!!! What's the dimensions of your tank, diameter and length?

How did you make sure you were safe before you cut into it, did you test the air for combustibles?

Steve

I filled the tank with water twice, filled it with water and soap twice, the we lit the fumes on fire with a electric fence box and stood behind the house. We left it open with water in it for two weeks, Then we filled it with soap and water marked the holes for the door and started cutting with a sawsall. No danger after that. After we cut the door out we built a huge fire in the tank to get the propane residue out of the tank.

Its a 500 gallon propane tank, I haven't really measured it other than that

After you washed the tank twice, were you actually able to light the fumes on fire? Were the flames big? Just curious, I can get a free 30" diameter by 7 foot tank which is larger than I am used too so I want to protect myself if I ever go forward with future ideas. I was thinking that my local fire dept could test the air for combustibles.

Can't wait to see your pics:-)

We might have lit it before, I'm not sure. But we started by lighting it with a lighter and eventually it would just light and go out. So we hooked that box up and it kept a constant stark. It was basically just burning what little fumes were in the tank. The flame came no more than 6 inches out of the tank. If you fill the thing with soap and water a couple of times and wash it out, then fill it with both again, make sure you have a opening on the tank and when you cut their really isn't anything to catch on fire.

Its ten foot total, its a little bigger than I need, but it was free so I couldn't say no. I think the tounge is 2 ft long, so its an 8 ft actual trailer.

Should get some good pics next week, when me and my friends have spring break and we're gonna work on it every night next week. Hopefully I remember the camera. Having to wait til next week because of break, and I'm not really that good of a welder, and I want it done right, so i'm getting my friend to do it. Plus he's got the welder.

Also does anyone know anything about seasoning a tank like this. I've got the tank red hot by building a fire in the bottom of it, But I figured it might be a cast-iron pot were you have to season it with Crisco or something like that. Any help is appreciated.
