Thread Starter
Hello everyone, I'm Doug from IL. I have not smoked a single thing yet. I did take the 5 day course and learned a lot. I don't even know anyone who uses a smoker. I have learned a lot just "lurking" the past few days. I have the Cabelas 48" stainless steel vertical smoker and have not even seasoned it yet. Now that I'm registered I'm sure I will be able to get plenty of help with my first timer questions.

DK - There is great info and people to answer all questions here. As mentioned by GS above a butt is forgiving (as pork is my Q preference) and you can do okay on it on your own. These folks will help you take it to the next level at your own pace.

I too don't even know anyone who does this either. (a cousin in KY not included) But you will find several via folks in your area via this site.

'Owdee Doug! Welcome to SMF. Pick a meat- the Boston Butt is a good place to start, as suggested. Read up on mops, check the calibration on your electronic thermometer <You DO have one, right?> and peruse the "cook by temp" info. Then you got all you'll ever need to do it. After that, it's just fine tuning.

Like everybody has been saying, apork butt roast is a good one to start with.Make sure you get that thermometer so you can keep track of the internal temperature of your meat.
Good luck and good smoke!
