Hello all, another newb here. Just posting to say hi. I've been lurking for a couple of weeks, and read alot of good info here. I've got two smokers. one is a homemade upright that someone gave me about 8 years ago. Its very crude, but has served me well. Last year I bought a "professional Chargriller" with side fire box, and man do I love it. Look forward to learning some new things from you guys (gender not withstanding).

Brined my first turkey last week, and it was great. I kept the fire at 175 and expected a six hour cook, but bird reached 160 in about 4 hours. Was this faster cooking time because of the brining?

Welcome Curt -

I suspect your temperature was alot higher than you thought. Where you using the built in therometer? They are usally way off. Fortunately poultry is best when smoked at higher temperatures unless pork, beef or venison.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Welcome to SMF. Have a great Turkey Day and then get active in the site. Show us some photos of your activities and subscribe to Jeff's 5 day eCourse. You will have a lot of fun and learn a lot.

Thanks Debi, but I have checked the thermo and it "appears" to be accurate. Its right on with ambient air temp and also agrees with both my meat thermos.

Thanks to all for the warm welcome. Besides Jeff, how many of you are in the Tulsa area?

Pescadero, Ecourse was vey informative. Thanks. I tried to upload a pic of my other passion(Porsches), but the file is way too big. I'll have to try and resize it and try again later.

Welcome to SMF! This is a great place to learn about smoking meat (and a variety of other stuff, too). The folks around here are friendly and always willing to help, so don't be shy about asking questions.

We're glad to have you with us.

Hey Meowey, you smoke cigars as well as meat? I keep Ashton vsg's and opusX in my humi. Nothing compares to puffing on a good stick while sitting by the smoker.

BTW, whats with all the grunt smilies? (southeast asia vet here)

Hello Porsche Smoker, I am also a newbie but I would recommend testing your thermo with boiling water. It should read at about 212.

I saw your posts on cigars. I love em but they always seem to have a lasting after taste for me. Is that due to the quality or just the nature of the beast?

Welcome to the SMF and take care

Martin

Strange you should comment on that. Unfortunately, the Porsche 914's are notorious for engine fires, and burning to the ground. Fortunately, I have no personal experience.

Pescadero, Where ya from on the Oregon coast? I spent some time in Lincoln city/Depot bay. Beautiful coastline. Loved the ocean fishing trips.

Martin, I find very few cigars that I like. I'm a little spoiled. Yes, they all have a lingering after taste. Some good, some bad, others worse. a $2.00 cigar is just that. Smoking cigars is alot like smoking meat. Experimentation, and personal taste.

Greetings from a fellow tulsan! Welcome to SMF!

EDIT:
I pulled the links becuase I'm a moron!

My bad i figure the search feature would keep the search parameters.

Click the members in the top blue bar. IN top right hand corner, click Search members. under the white bar click advanced search,

All you have to do is type Tulsa in the "location" field. You don't have to choose state or any of that.
