I just seasoned my new chargiller smoker with firebox. I purchased the chargiller cover from Lowes and can immediately tell it is cheaply made and likely won't last long. Any ideas or advice or suggestions for a better cover to protect my new toy. What do all the other Char-griller owners out there use?

Thanks, auheld11

auheld11, don't be too quick to judge. The smoker you purchased will be a fine unit for many years for you. While it's not a thick steel unit, it will serve you fine, day in and day out.

oooooooooh, the cover is cheap. I must agree with that!

Dang it, I didn't read you clearly enough. My cover didn't last even a year.

Auheld11 I actually went to my local Wal-Mart and picked a very nice grill cover for about $13. It may have been a clearance item but it is a very durable nylon material and is large enough to fit the CG and SFB no problem.

Here' what I did for my grill that was left out in the wind, rain, and snow when I lived in NH. I went to Home Depot, got one of the heavy duty tarps to fit (not the blue ones, the brown or silver heavyweights), got bungy rope off the reel sufficient to go around the unit, and two bungy hooks. Hard-core hardware stores are probably a better source.

Lay out the tarp flat on the ground. Starting at one end, thread bungy up thru an eyelet, pull to the next and thread down, etc., alternating stringing the bungy rope all the way around the outside of the tarp until you come back around to the original end. Lay the tarp on the grill or 'que. Pull the bungy tight and install the hooks so they hook to each other. Release to remove the tarp from the thang being covered.

Not only does this method hold on the object in a good wind, but it lasts for a long time, and doesn't have the felt line in it that gathers moisture and freezes to the steel -- rusting and ripping in the cold.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I talkedto my wife about putting mine in the the living room to protect it from the weather. That's how I got the OK from her to build the smoke shack. Of course, if I push the issue any farther, the smoke shack might need to have a bedroom as well!

Seriously though, I'm in the same boat. I'm not as much worried about the smoking chamber; it is built very solid. But, the firebox lost it's paint from the heat a long time ago. I keep mine on the front porch (under an over hang) to keep it protected. But as I mentioned in another thread, the gal mentioned above aint to happy about it.

Auheld11...I have the Chargriller cover you speak of. I too felt that at first it looked cheap. I've had my Chargriller for a year out in the elements of Orlando Florida heat and rain and believe it or not, the cover is like new. It's actually very well made and hasn't torn or lost a seam. My grill looks like new. Well, at least on the outside it looks like new. Don't worry about it. You'll be fine.

Congrats on the new CG. You will love it. I loved mine so much, that I got a 2nd one....

I do not use a cover at all on mine. I had read where a lot of people have had difficulties with the cover holding together. So I just opted not to use one. Mine first one is almost 2 yrs old, and doing fine.

Just close the vents and you should be fine. Only one time did I find some water in mine. We had a down pour with about 4 inches of rain one time.... other than that, no problems.

As far as the paint peeling and blistering on the sfb, after you cook, spray some veggie oil on it and it should be fine. If and when it does get real bad, just get some hight temp paint and spray it. But it will blister and paint again. Be sure and oil the hinges as well.

Happy cooking,
Bill

I got a heavy duty generic grill cover from Lowes or Home Depot that works very well. It's almost as good as the Camp Chef cover I got fo the Smoke Vault. Heavy canvas outside and rubberized inside. About $30 I think.

Yup, the stock CG covers are a piece of crap at best. Mine split after the first year, so I "installed" duct tape to the inside of the cover where it split... believe it or not, it's holding it together rather well.

I like kew_el_steve's idea with the tarp and bungy cord... I think I'll try that.

Please pardon the hijack, but Steve, what size tarp did you use?

Thanks everyone, I knew I could count on ya'll. This place is great. First two butts on the smoker right now to take to the Auburn ole miss football game Saturday. War Eagle!
