Using Cowboy brand lump charcoal - all we have around here from Home Depot and hickory chunk I cut from fire wood on my table saw. Don't laugh the table saw worked great making slices of those hickory logs in short order!

The temperature is staying around 250 in the middle but it's still hotter on the firebox side (good thing I'm starving). I'm going to have to play like I'm grilling and movethe chicken all around the smoker.

One thing I noticed right away ... You can't put as much on these things as you can on 5 shelves in the Smoke Vault! It also uses WAY MORE fuel!

Here's the first pictures of my chicken. (Too late for anything else):

More to come!

Debi,

Please tell us if you thought there was a noticable difference in taste vs your other smoker. Just curious to hear your comparison...........

Thanks

I did find a slight difference in the smoke but that could just be learning the new toy. Also used all the big chunks from my Mequite box and hickory box then started cutting firewood hickry logs to feed the thing!

I think I like the taste of charcoal beter than the lump I used (Cowboy brand all I could find). It also burned up so quick I used what would normally be a months worth of fuel and wood in one chicken smoke! Yikes! Unlike charcoal the lump was very smokey too.

For the first run it wasn't bad but right now I'd have to say I enjoyed the smokey flavor better on my ECB or Smoke Vault. The hotter fire seemed to bring out the bitterness of the Mesquite more IMHO. It was fun though!

Heres the pictures!
1st chicken placed on the smoker with a sprinkle of Jeff's rub
2nd about 45 minutes in
3rd all done and ready to eat
4th dinner finally!
