My name is Curt and I am from Lancaster, PA..(aka..Amish Country!!)
I am new to smoking..actually I do not have a smoker yet..I was thinking
of going with the Old Smokey electric smoker..I prefer to be able to set it
and forget it!! I don't have the time to "tend the fire"..I have 2 small kids
that keep me too busy! Does anyone have this smoker and does it do a
good job..I mainly want to do ribs, brisket, and brats. Any pointers wuold
be appreciated...thanks!

I can't give you advice on the electrics... I am a charcoal/wood kinda guy. We have lots of folks that use the smoker you mentioned... someone will be more than happy to fill you in.

Don't forget to sign up for Jeff's free 5 day ecourse, it is chocked full of great info to get you on your way to smokin' your first feast.

Welcome to the fourm, me and the wife have spent many hours out your way. Beautiful out that way, but why did they name the cities by all the farmers markets like they did?

Welcome aboard Curt! You're not too far from me! I started out on an electric and loved it, especially for the convenience. I didn't have the type of smoker you are speaking about, but by taking a look at I would question it for two reasons...#1, it will be very inconvenient for accessing while smoking because of the top lid, #2, it doesn't have a vent, I don't think I've ever heard of that in a smoker. A lot of people here have the ECB smoker. I went to a gas smoker looking for the same type of convenience, but wanted a bit bigger and better temp control. If I were you I wouldn't rule that out. The GOSM seems to be one of the most used smokers here on the site. Good luck in your search and take that 5-day eCourse of Jeff's!!! icon_mrgreen.gif

Welcome Aboard Curt -

I know there's someone around here that has or has had and Old Smokey hopefully they be along shortly. As Shellbellc mentioned Brinkman and Great Smokey Mountain are the biggest sellers around here. HAve you checked out the smokers in the Smoking Meat Store? There's quite a few in all styles and prices.

Welcome to SMF, and good luck on your quest for a smoker.

Welcome to SMF,Curt....that smoker your thinkin about ,works a little differently than most ,in that it holds in the steam from the cooking process thus taking less time in cooking....I don't have that unit myself but I do own a masterbuilt electric and love it because of the ease of use by being able to set a constant temp....I like to make bacon and jerky and find it very convenient for that....do some more research ,you'll decide on what's right for you PDT_Armataz_01_34.gif
