Been reading alot on the site and the forum. Decided to join, I just started with my GOSM last week. I've had it for 3 months but I didnt have time to play. It seems that posts on this forum seem to get replies not like the other sites. Anyway. I did have trouble keeping my temp below 285. I was thinking of adding a dampner around the base of the burner, like a wrap around that control's the inflow. Could that solve my probleum?

I would assume that you would just need to cut off gas flow til you get the right temp...no sense in spending money where you don't need to, save it for food.

Couple of questions.

1. Are you using the built in thermo? You should be using a digital or some other type (do not trust the built in)

2. does the size of the flame change when you use the temp nob?

3. how are you shutting down the unit? do turn the gas on your GOSM first or on the reg or on the tank? You should be shutting down on the GOSM first

There is a as possiblity that you have a bad regulator.
You may need to call MFG and have them ship a new one.

Thanks. I had a smaller thermo that shot passed 240 while the unit reading was 300. The flame does change when I turn the knob but the lowest setting can get puts me around 285.
I shut it down on the unit first then the tank.

Hello there and welcome to the forum..
I have the Big Block, and have had no problems controling the temps down to the 150* range...sure sounds like you have a regulator problem...and from reading the posts from others, that have had similar problems..they contacted the company, and have had the regulator replaced...don't let them tell you that is the nature of the beast or to crack the door open to help control the temps ...that is pure BS...Good luck...

Welcome to SMF bondvader!!! vulcan75001 gives you great advise. The regulator was a problem on several GOSM units in the past. I would contact them and have them send me a replacement and as noted above accept no excuses or that's just how it is stories. Good luck and let us know how it comes out for ya.

Bondvader, I use the GOSM meself. I never run the regulator on the tank full open. I'll open the valve all the way and then turn it back down to about half. This is out of habit cuz if you run the valve full open in the winter time, the regulator will freeze.

Also make sure that you have water in the water pan, running a dry pan will give you higher temps as well.

Thanks, I did take the 5 day course. I liked it alot, it helped. I will try to back the gas tank down first before I break out my tools!

Bondvader, I also had the same problem the first time I used my GOSM making jerky. I was using the smoker without water in the pan to dry the jerky. I found that if I set the smoker on low and the closed the valve on the propane tank to about one turn open I could get the temps I wanted. I have since smoked butts, lots of ribs and chicken with the water pan full and have not had a problem with the temps getting out of control. In fact I usually run just under the medium setting to stay around 225 deg.

I tryed opening the tank a qtr turn with a larger bakers square pie plate for the chunks. I think I can hold around 240 on a cooler afternoon and no wind. I hink I will have to swap the regulator. Is that an item I can buy instead of going through the company?

you already bought it once and it was defective....let the company send you a replacement...
