Well, it was finally delivered!

First, let me appologize for being absent from the Forum for so long! It seems Everyboody and their Brother is suddenly wanting Automatic Transfer Switches for their home generators in preparation for the upcoming Hurricane Season. I've been busier than a three legged Dog in a Sausage Factory!!! But hey, the money is unbelievable and you gotta strike while the griddle HOT! Anyway.............................

Being that there are no SS Big Blocks to be found, I settled for the regular model. I must say, I got more for my money than I expected! It seems the "Big Block" comes with more extras than their "sub" models - for that I am thankful. I am seasoning it now, and the only drawback I immediately noticed is that the door does not seal very well and I wish the walls were of thicker steel. Other than that, it appears to be a quality unit for the bucks. Temperature was reached very quickly, adjustability was inpressive and the factory door Thermo was right on the money (something that NEVER happens!). I'm sure I'll add an after-market lower thermo to boot.

One question..........how quickly do they go through a 20# LP tank? Do I need a stand-by for an All-Nighter?

Any how, here's a few picks of the new Smoker. I'll be breaking it in with a Pork Tenderloin, some BB's and of course...............ABT's this weekend!!! Hope everyone has been doing well in my absence!

Sure is a pretty sight! 8) Congrats on the new smoker and I hope you get lots of use out of it.

I use 30# propane tanks and get about 50 hours from them so I'd expect you'll get somewhere around 30 hours from your 20# tanks.

I strongly recommend having at least 1 spare tank so you have a full one at all times. It's a bummer to run out of fuel in the middle of a smoke. It happened to me once, had to move everything to the oven after only 4 hours. Thing is ... I had this feeling it was going to run out the whole time. I promised myself that wouldn't happen again, so now I have four 30# tanks (and right now they are all full).

Thanks! Good idea about the 30 pounders, I'll have to check some of the local propane suppliers to see if they have them, don't know where else I would locate one.

Jeff

I've found 30#'ers at Lowes, Ace Hardware, Northern Tool, and at all of the propane suppliers.

The thing I looked for when buying the larger tanks was a rolled handle to carry it by. All the tanks have "handles" in the collar around the connector valve, but a lot of them are just holes cut out. The 30# tanks are considerably heavier and the bottles without the rolled handle are more difficult to carry.

Yeah, I think the larger tanks are a good idea for smoking, and still portable. Gas grills usually cook for 30 minutes to an hour so a 20#'er will last a while. But when you go to smoke a brisket or a butt a 20# tank must be full and ready for a 12 to 22 hour cook (you never know

).

Jeff, I get between 20 & 25 hours on my 20 pound tank. If your thermo is right on, you hit it luck, most of the complaints about the GOSM is the thermo. Mine is off as much at 15 degree in cold weather and 5 degrees in warm weather. Unfortunatly this thermo can't be claibrated. :(

Hey Jeff,
Congratulations on the new smoker. Sorry you couldn't find the SS model because it's also very impressive -- good quality. But, I'm sure you'll enjoy the black one too.

By the way, I did one of Earl's stuffed pork loins this past weekend. It was absolutely great! My wife has been a little hesitant about my smoking efforts but with this one, I now have a full smoking supporter. I highly recommend the sutuffed loin. Again, good smoking and welcome back!

Welcome back Jeff, its good to hear from you again.

Congratulations on the new addition to your arsenal! Thats is exactly the same unit that I use, in fact, I like it so much that bought a second one last summer! Because of my wacky work schedule, I like to smoke alot of extra stuff at once and seal individual portions with my foodsaver for quick meals.

BTW, There happens to be a very large RV dealer right up the road from me, that's where I bought my 30# LP tanks and where I get them filled. So if Lowes or Home Depot don't carry oversized tanks in your area, you might try a local RV dealer/supplier.

Cheers,
Brian

It's great to be back in touch with everyone, I was gettin' the DT's!!! :D

Unfortunately, I don't know how long it will last due to an unwavering schedule for the next month or so..............but it won't last forever and I'll be back as usual. Thanks to everyone that has filled in the Blanks during my hiatus.

I've contacted some LP suppliers in the area for the 30 pounders and the best price (new) I can find is $65.00. Is that steep or normal? One guy I spoke with actually tried to talk me out of that route, saying that I could get 2 new 20#'s at Sam's for $20 ea. and have 10 extra #'s. I know they make a hook-up for dual tanks that you can switch effortlessly between tanks with the flip of a valve, but I don't know what to ask for to find it......anyone out there using such a device?

I'll have to look up Dutch's stuffed loin, I'm presuming it will work just as well with a Tenderloin. Earl, if you;ve got the link, pass it on so I can go to it. I'm looking forward to the first relaxing weekend I've had in I don't know how long. Just me, and Cold One, some great music and tending my new Baby! Mom's back in College for the next several Saturday's upgrading her credentials, so I've got some good "Me" time coming!!!! :D

Jeff

I have not ever used one, but they are called dual tank regulator or automatic switch overs. I would imagine a RV place would sell them. They are kind of pricey though. Here is one from a webstore. I found this one on ebay

Jeff, here is the link to my Pork Lion
Smoked Stuffed Pork Loin.

I used a full pork loin (they're about 13-14 inches long) but you can use a smaller pork loin roast and just adjust the stuffing recipe down. A pork tenderloin is a little small to fillet out without worrying about the meat drying out.

Earl, the stuffed loin looks like a real winner! Showed the recipe and photos to the Wife and it includes some of her favorite items......I'll definitely have to give it a shot. Thanks!

Grandmaster, that looks like what I'm looking for except I'd want the pigtails included. Doesn't seem pricey at al to me. I'll check with the local LP dealers here or an RV shop, now that I know what to ask for. Thanks for the assist!

Jeff

Hey, Jeff! Good to hear from you again! I just finished winter call and am looking forward to a great warm season, if that's possible in this neck of the woods! Ended up doing an all nighter Wednesday with heavy wet snow and of course idiot motorists!

As for that dual tank automatic regulator it should run you about $35 to $45. I have seen them for more and for less. Most propane dealers can help you with this one.

Then again, most propane dealers will be happy to install a 250 or 500 pound tank and fill it either by auto delivery or call delivery. And you can pipe them easily to other equipment you have. Just a thought!

Cheers!
