My direct answer to your question is "I don't know." But to pontificate just a little, I recently repainted my Char Broil. I considered the oven proof paint for the fire box and cooking chamber (outside only of course) and then the Rustoleum type for the legs etc. My logic may be flawed but I painted the whole thing with the oven proof type of paint. My thought is that it must be pretty tough to stand up against that heat so hopefully it will offer more protection for the support structrue as well. It has held up nicely now for about a month. crazyhorse, I would still paint with a good high-heat paint. On occasion I've run my smoker at 400* to cook poultry. That is the cooking grate temperature, near the fire at the bottom I'm sure the temperature got high enough to burn regular paint.
