The key to good tri tips is keeping them medium rare and below, then giving them a good rest (10-15 minutes) in light foil wrap.

Got it thank you  !      set 225 approx 2 hours until 130 degrees or so is attained then cover for 20 min rest.  At any point do I cover while cooking to achieve more tenderness?

I do not cover them during the smoking. I don't think tri tips will benefit at all like say a pork but or chuck would. Your not trying to break down fats and connective tissues. I keep mine very simple too. A little dry brine with kosher salt, then add cracked black pepper and some rosemary.

Tri tip is like smoking a steak.

We like ours rare so we pull it at about 125.

After a 20 minute rest it's ready to cut.

Or you can pull it early & finish it on a hot grill to give it a sear.

I wouldn't recommend covering it.
