hello from New Zealand!

Ive been reading these forums for a while now and the information I have gathered has been amazing, Ive built two smallish pits directly from advice and other peoples builds as inspiration, I haven't been able to find any info on a build idea I have got so I decided to register, introduce myself and put my question out there

I have a catering gig coming up in about 6 weeks for about 150 people so its time to build a bigger pit!

tanks are harder to come by in NZ we dont get the big propane tanks you guys use in the states so its mainly pressure tanks and fuel tanks

I have put aside a few and now Im trying to come up with the best configuration

there is 1 tank 37 inch long 30 inch diameter

two tanks that are 48 inch long and 23 inch diameter

and a smaller one thats 25 inch long and 15 inch diameter

I also have a fair bit of steel plate at different thicknesses

initially I was planning on welding the two green tanks together into one long tank and that's still an option but I had the idea why not put them side by side with an offset firebox feeding both of them at one end

it would make the rig much shorter and easier to fit on a trailer and I could use exhaust dampers if I only wanted to cook on one side

also its a much shorter path for heat and smoke so I figured temps would be more even

I have hunted online and have found a few trailer dual pit builds but none of them have a shared firebox

any info or opinions would be really appreciated, do you think the shared firebox could work? or given my situation is there a configuration that would be better? and do you think I will be able to fit enough meat in the finished pit? (i was planning on 25 racks of pork ribs and 6 briskets)

thanks in advance!

James

I think I've seen a few builds like that right here on SMF... hopefully somebody will come along with a better memory than mine and remember them ...

That's really cool mate
Cheers for the pics!
Great to see it can be done I have hope!
I'm still not certain it will be the easiest or best way but Either way I have to get something knocked up
Looks like a busy couple weeks ahead!

Made a bit of progress!
Decided to go for two fireboxes joined and sharing a wall I figure they will insulate each other a little bit and I'm going to put slim firebricks on the bottom
I have the two tanks ready with the nessasary circle segments cut out and I removed and plugged some old pipes
StI'll a long way to go!

Neat idea on the intakes. Add some thin flat bar to block the air 100% as I see there is still some air gap. You want that air tight so if it is closed the fire goes out.
