Gentlemen,

I'm in the market for a temperature control product for my large BGE. Search function wasn't too fruitful so I figured I'd ask here. I feel like I've put my time in this past year and after many nights and days of smoking, I deserve to sit back and sleep through the night without worrying. Have previously used the iGrill 2 thermometer to monitor ambient grate temp and meat temp. It was great because their app allowed me to graph everything and I'd be able to export the data into Excel. The engineer in me loved it. Unfortunately, their app took a huge crap and it's pretty much useless now, with no graphing ability.

I want something that connects to wifi, has a blower, great temperature control, and great temperature probes. I'd prefer to be able to have great iPhone app functionality.

The models I have looked at are:

Flame Boss 300 wifi

BBQ Guru DigiQ DX2

CyberQ Cloud

Any thoughts/recommendations? I'd like to have one by next Friday, smoking another brisket then.

Thanks in advance,

Armin

Armin, the DigiQ DX2 doesn't have the wifi capability you're looking for.  I'm using mine in a 22.5" WSM, not a BGE.  It works great, but the right charcoal makes a huge difference.

     1. With KBB, I found that it will occasionally chase temps because the charcoal burns out so quickly and unevenly compared to denser charcoals.  When it is chasing temp it can overstoke the fire, but the temp eventually comes back down.

     2.  I've only used lump for higher temp smokes, in excess of 300F.  It keeps a nice steady temp until the lump nears the end of its life.

     3.  With Royal Oak Ridge Briquettes, a much more dense and stable charcoal, I use the Guru as a minimum temp stoker.  I've had 2 to 7 hour smokes recently where the Guru never comes on because the chamber temp is so rock solid due to the charcoal.  The temp range of the smokes was anywhere from 165F (beef jerky) to 350F (whole chickens).  If the temp drops at all, the Guru stops it and no over-stoking.

Personally I'd go with the CyberQ Cloud only because I've had solid performance from the DigiQ DX2, but I think you'd be happy with either the Flame Boss or the CyberQ Cloud.

The CyberQ looks really neat and I think it will get the job done!
