Hoping someone may be able to guide me on old country vs a used 5 footer.

Hello, I'm new to the site but have been lurking for a couple of weeks reading. It's time to replace my gas grill and my wife prefers the flavor off a charcoal or wood flame. We've been using a "smoke box" inside the gas grill for a while and I do like the flavor better too.

Originally we were considering a okj but after reading on here and another site decided to look elsewhere. After seeing some recommend old country smokers I looked on academy, closest store is about 2 hours away from us, and found the pecos and over under. We are thinking about making the trip this weekend to look at them in person but in the mean time I'm still watching cl.

There is only 1 pic so I'm gonna call the guy tomorrow and ask for more pics of it but I found a 5 foot 24" round 3/8" thick pipe set up similar to the over under. They are asking $450 for it which from all my looking around is a steal on something like that? It is set up cart style and I'm sure heavy as all get out. The only pic they have does show surface rust all over which I'm not overly concerned about as long it's just surface rust. Not sure if it's ok to link direct to the ad so you guys can look at it to help me decide?

Thanks in advance.

Edit: managed to crop most of the person out of the photo so here it is. My concerns are, if it is 3/8 steel doors would it not need a counter balance on the main (to me the doors look thinner but haven't been able to call and ask for more pics) and do you think since the fire box looks to only run halfway down I'd have crazy temps on that side vs the other?

That is kind of an odd looking setup. Not saying it won't work fine but not sure I would risk $450 on it. One thing to note is there are lots of good welders out there but not all of them can build a good smoker. I recently had one built for me by a local welder (3/16") to my specs which I put together from tons of online research and online calculators. While he is an awesome welder I was surprised at how little he knew about smokers.

I wouldn't hold that against your welder.  My auto mechanic is great, but he's not a very good driver.

It is an odd looking one for sure, kind of why I was looking for opinions on it since I've not used a true stick burner yet. I did call and leave a message asking if it is still available and if they have any more pics I could look at but nothing back yet 4 hours later. They could still be at work I suppose but kind of thinking I may be better off just going with of the old country models for my first smoker then look at upgrading down the road after I get some experience with one under my belt. Not sure if the boss will go for the over under or the pecos when we go look at them but thinking the over under may be the way for us to go for now. If I do happen to hear back from them with more pics I'll update though. Thanks for the thoughts on it this one though I do appreciate it =-) .
