How's it going everyone? I just registered but have been lurking for awhile as I was researching and getting ready to buy a new grill/smoker. I had an ancient Char Griller propane that was finally rotting apart. I had picked up an electric smoker a few years ago to give it a try and really enjoyed the experience. So it was time to get a new grill and smoker so I decided on an Oklahoma Joe Reverse Flow Longhorn. Here's the pictures from start to finish.

I'm pretty stoked to get this girl seasoned up early this week. Thanks for stopping by to check it out and I look forward to posting and reading.

Regards,

Brian

Welcome from SC, Brian. It's really good to have you on this great site. It looks like you have everything covered on your new rig. Your pics will be a great tutorial for folks with a new OKJ.

Good luck and good smoking, Joe. :grilling_smilie:

Welcome, Brian.  I'm new here as well.  That looks like a solid smoker.  Great job with the build and tutorial.  Can't wait to see what you turn out on it.

Happy to report the season/test fire went super well. Got the unit oiled up and put a bag of charcoal into my fuel box.

I started the fire around 6PM and was up until 1:00AM with temps holding over 200 degrees. I used my wireless thermo setup to write down temps throughout the test fire. I'm very impressed with the stability and burn times. I adjusted the damper about three times total. Temps on both sides of the grill were fairly even (~10 degree) until about 9:15PM. For whatever reason they started fluctuating (~15-20 degree). I have a feeling it might just have been the fuel running a bit low but I'll pay attention next time. At a quarter open I was running from 250-260 on the hot side once it was at temp from 8PM to midnight. The cool side was running between 240-250 during the same time period. Well within the range of acceptable temps for me. I had one minor failure. The Nomex self stick gasket failed on the fire box. I should have known better. Thankfully it didn't fail 100% so it was sealed well enough to get through the test burn. I ordered another 1000 degree gasket and I'll use the food safe high temp RTV to adhere it to the fire box lid recess. I plan on buying a brisket next week per my wife's request and giving it a go.

Best Regards,

Brian

Haha, I'm going to get that fire box gasket replaced as soon as the new one arrives. Thanks for the kind words! I'm going to have to temp the fire box plate and see what kind of temps I get.

Brian
