Hello all,

I have the Brinkman vertical smoker, and it's been great! I start charcoal in it and then throw on hickory wood. I love the smoker, but I am always opening and closing vents to maintain the temperature. I've had it for about 4 years now and I love it!

If you're not familiar with this smoker, it has a vertical cooking chamber and the firebox is offset. I cook with the chimney fully open and I adjust the vent to tweak the temperature throughout the cook.

I decided to try the IQ120 blower to help me maintain the temperature. My first cook with it will be tomorrow!

Is there anyone here with experience with the IQ120 on an offset smoker?? My biggest concern is melting the hose, which I've heard has happened to other people. I don't know if they installed it incorrectly, or if it's a flaw. I've also seen people drill a hole into the fire box and connect it with a fitting.

Any input is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I know nothing about the design of the IQ120.  In theory, it functions the same as several other thermostatically controlled blowers.  I have the BBQ Guru unit and the company offers many different types of fittings to install it on various types of smokers.  None use a plastic tube to attach to the firebox, so there's no chance of anything melting.

Just an update on this post in case anyone else has the same question as I did! The IQ120 works well with the Brinkman Vertical Smoker. There was MUCH less tending to the fire than before. When it's unable to maintain the temperature, that usually means it's time for more wood.

I'm very happy with the IQ120. It probably wouldn't work for a huge smoker, but for the backyard smoker it works great!
