So just joined this group and hopefully get some advice along the way during my build. So currently waiting on finding a tank for CC. So haven't decided yet on building my own FB or using another tank and placing it vertical. How thick of steel should be used for FB if I build it? Thanks

Ok so might of found a tank inly problem been sitting on guys property for 20 or 30 years now being unused so he doesn't know what it was used for. He did the sniffer test and can't smell fuel. Any opinions on this? Think its safe since been sitting so long? What would be best was to making it safe to use if I do get it?

If the thing has been sitting outside in the mud for 20 years the bottom maybe rotted out of it.

Post pics would help alot.

I use 1/4" for my fireboxes usually and add firebricks where needed.

As always posts pics and questions here BEFORE you start hacking it apart, so the folks here can help you make a sound plan of attack.

Looks like and old fuel tank.

If it is 3/16 or 1/4" it will work fine.

Depends how much you want to spend if you are going to sand blast of not.

Let us know what your plan is and we can throw in our 2 cents.

so picking this one up tomorrow lines aren't to scale but have labeled what I plan on doing with each piece. Hope it will work.

Toss the 75 watt harbor freight grinder and use a 7 or 9" grinder with big flat not cupped wire wheel. I like the flat wheels with the bristles that are twisted in rolls, they last longer.

You do not have to remove every tiny piece of paint.

Make sure you use a dust mask for the nasty crap in the old paint and also a face shield as those bristles have a habit of sticking in your face.

I would try burning it at this stage, you don't have much to loose as that paint is hard as hell.

ok so time to crunch the numbers I used feldons cal. and this is what I came up with.  my CC tank is 72''x 31'' so it came out to

cc= 56153.21 cub in

FB= 188717.74 cub in

FB Dem= 24x27x30

Chimney= 6'' diam at 34.39 lengh

FB intake= 19''x3''

FB to CC=29.85'' or 233.28 sq in

so if anyone wants to double check my work I would greatly appreciate it, and I did times the segement opening x1.5 like I read to do since its going to be a reverse flow

ARC....  is the distance around the curved surface.....  The Arc....

Chord AB is the distance across the smoker body....

Ok that's why I want to be double checked. How did you come up with 13? When I ran the numbers it came to an segment area of 217 but when I put 13 in the circle calculator it gave me a segment area of 495. I'm just trying to figure it out for my learning.

Ok grinding about done and getting close to the fun part. So here are the 2 tanks I'm using to make this. The round one is going to be my CC and the oil take sitting vertically I'm going to cut up for my FB and warming chamber. My plan is to cut along the tape,the bottom is my FB which will be 30" long then coming up 24" then coming in 6" and going straight up to make the WC. Probably should of switched position of tanks cause as it's laid out now the firebox would be on other side of tank. So looking for advice if this plan sounds like a good idea or should I do something different before I start cutting?
