I'm pretty new to smoking and I bought a cheap used CG #2828. I've been burning charcoal and wood in it using a water pan below the meat and making sure the charcoal is on the opposite side of the griller. It works fine for a newbie but I would really like to make it into a true offset smoker so I can eliminate opening the CC to add charcoal. Now I know there is an add-on piece you can purchase form CG #22424 for about $69 to $80 and being the true cheapskate I am I wanted to know if there was a cheaper method. My father hoards everything and I know he would have some scrap sheet steel he would give to me (for some good smoked meat). He also has the wielding equipment and I have the drive to learn.

So I guess my silly question is which is the smarter option, forking over the cash or building my own and spending some quality time with pops'? I want this CG to be a learning tool before I invest (or build) a much nicer smoker.

Ok thanks guys! I've been reading all the builds and getting ideas. Hoping to plan it and get everything I need over the winter and build it in the spring so it's ready for next year.
