I am planning (in my head) a wooden smoke house, using a 55 gal drum as a firebox. I was wondering if I could straddle the fire box with the legs of my smokehouse, and run the flue right into the bottom of the smoke chamber, or will I get too much heat. the smoke chamber I was planning is 30"x30"x48".

Sounds like a good plan to me! Just keep the vents mostly closed to keep the heat down, wide open = more heat. FYI any paint on the drum will start to bubble if not removed prior. I would also have a way to open and close the vent to the flue between chambers.

Thanks. The upper vents I did think of, but the damper between I didn't. Better to find out now when it's still in the planning stages.

Putting an adjustment between the Firebox and Cook chamber will only increase the heat in the FB and burn excess fuel...   Using the air inlet to the FB is the way to adjust heat...

This is why I posted here. To get great advice. Thanks for your help.
