I have two pieces of flat 1/4" rolled steel that I plan on using as supports for a cooking grate over my fire pit.  I need to paint them, so they don't rust.  Do you know of a brand of paint (Rustoleum maybe) that would be safe for the supports?  The steel won't be fastened in any way.  Instead, they will just lay over the bricks so they can be moved/put away when not in use.  I see plenty of paints that work on grills, but I assume they are only talking about the outside, not the inside.

EDIT:  I asked around and my brother has bars of 304 SS so I'm using them.

You do not want paint in the fire area when food is above it...   Or I don't understand what you are trying to do....

Rather than buy expanded metal and making my own racks for my fire pit (fire pit, nothing to do with a smoker) I am going to repurpose a rack from a 22" WSM.  To do this I need supports, something to sit the rack on.  I have flat 1/4" steel that I plan on using but being that they are raw steel I need to get something on them for protection.

The food won't be touching it but it will be laying on a rack that is touching it and all of that will be above a fire/fire pit.
