Wood chips are behaving strange?

Hi there!

Brand new to smoking, just picked up a Masterbuilt 44 inch propane smoker and smoked a couple of racks of ribs the other night...absolutely delicious but it brings me to my question...

While smoking the chips seemed to take an awfully long time to start...once the first round of chips stopped smoking I threw in some more and it took about 45 minutes for them to begin smoking again! Once the smoke started, it only took about 20 minutes for the smoke to stop again. I added chips 3 times over the course of 2.5 hours at which point I decided to stop adding chips for the last half of the smoke.

Is this normal? Any insight is appreciated!

I've been using small logs (9" x 3-5" d) and large splits of logs for smoking. I start the smoker on high with all the vents open for about 20-30 min to get everything really smoking then shut down the vents and turn the propane to low. I'll add a few chunks of charcoal just to keep something hot on the wood.

I'm a newbie at the smoking box too so hopefully someone with more experience will chip in $0.02
