Royal Oak tiny lumps.

I decided to give the lump a try and bought 2 bags of Royal Oak. Upon opening the first back I saw it was filled with a lot of pcs no bigger than a plumb. I rumagged through the bag to find several medium size and 3 large chunks. It tried the second bag and is was not much better. Is this common or did I just happen to pick the 2 mini lump bags?

That's the way it has been when i have bought royal oak. I haven't tried any other lump brands so i don't know if it's common throughout.

The sizes vary in RO, but the thing I like is there are very few small pieces that fall through the grate.

And there are no big logs, or other debris in the bags.

I agree, lump is all over the place size-wise.  RO Lump size variation isn't as bad as Mesquite lump though, which there's a lot of out here in California.  I like the Mesquite lump, but I'm always amazed at the size variation, from 4"-6" thick to small pieces.  I put down a layer of briquettes in both my smoker and my chimney's if I'm using lump.  Keeps the pieces from falling through.

Out of the 4 or 5 brands of lump I have used I find RO the most consistent on size and burn.

I tried some ro lump the other day the size is all over the place even had two hunks that wouldn't even fit in my chimney.

I have used Royal Oak exclusively for many years and love it. Be sure when you are buying that you feel the bag and turn it end to end to see if it sounds like small pieces. When the employees at your source handle the bags roughly, the lumps get broken or crushed. Try to pick bags that are firm and don't rattle too much.
