Your plenum looks great very nice work. :)

Got a little welding and grinding done today. We welded both end plates onto the CC and then welded the CC to the FB. My welds aren't up to par so I'm belveling the edging and then welding. Following that up with grinding. It's a ton of extra work but it actually looks pretty good.

Nice work. Make sure u got that welder cranked up. Once u get good u will be addicted. Looks like ur running a stick welder now?

Yes it's a stick welder. We're running it hot so it's penetrating good. We're using a decent sized rod as well. I think the beveling should help as well.

looked like u had a mig weld before. What rod u running?

E7018 1/8".

Got a little more done today. Cut the FB door. Welded the seem all along the inside of the FB. It was only tack welded so I ran a bead all the way across. Then I put a better weld on the part that connects the FB to the CC and then hit it with the grinder.

This is the weld that connects s the FB to the CC. It may need a little touch up welds and grinding . I don't know if the paint will fill in those spots.

Are u leaving any millesclae on? It will weld better with it off. Be carful not to run too long a bead. Might start warping stuff. Metal likes to move. Good thinking on getting the inside too that will make it much stronger.

I honestly don't know what millescale is so I have no idea if there's millescale on it.

Two types of steel.

"Cold roll" This material has been rolled without heat and no mill scale. More expensive than hot roll because of the process it is also covered with a protective oil finish.

"Hot roll" this is rolled with heat as it is made it forms a temporary covering to protect it from rusting this covering is the mill scale. The covering is a temporary covering that should be blasted off before painting as most paint failures on fireboxes are due to leaving the scale and with the expansion and contraction the scale releases and it and the paint pop off.

For welding if your'e using 7018's the mill scale will cause excessive buckshot because it is detonating. I usually run my first pass with a 3/32" 6010 then clean up and cover with a 3/32" 7018.

I'm about to fab up my fire grate. If I make it 14" wide it leaves me 3" from the bottom of the cc to the bottom of the grate and 10" from the grate to the opening of the FB to cc. Will those numbers be ok? Not much else I can do really.

Plenum welded on. Fire grate welded up. The stack is only sitting there to see how it looks. Feldons recommended 20.5" stack. Dave told me it needed to be 34". The one in the pic is 30" and looks overkill. Not sure what to do about the length. For some reason I can't up load the pic with the stack on it. I'll try later.
