Hi guys, it's been a while since I've been on here. I am a Big Green Egg owner so burn barrels are new.

I traded my old Traeger for an off-set smoker. I have read the advantages of a burn barrel but don't have

one at this time. I don't want to mix charcoal and wood. I'd really like to just use hot wood coals. Are there

any suggestions? Can I just use a regular fire pit and pull the coals from there??? Thanks in advance,

you guys are the best :)!!!

Yes that would work. U could also try adding thin splits into ur smoker,

As in just using thin splits to get it started and adding bigger pieces later? I've read it's good to burn off all of the bad stuff which is why coals are best for the most pure flavor. What are your thoughts on that? Thanks for the response :)

I had a burn barrel that I used for my offsets. Used it maybe a half dozen times and then went back to just burning sticks in my firebox. You will go through twice the wood using a burn barrel and seeing as how I didn't have a unlimited free supply I couldn't justify it. Truthfully I couldn't tell one lick of difference from burning in a burn barrel and just using the coals or just burning sticks directly in my firebox.

But it is the way the real purists do it that's for sure!

Thank you. I don't have an unlimited supply either. If you can't tell the difference, then burning sticks sounds good to me

Same here.....no burn barrel, just add the wood directly into the fire box, great results, the family loves it.
