Have brinkmann electric water smoker vertical and don't have a temp gauge on the outside of the unit should I put one on or rely on the temp of the meat?

Yamaharider 66, welcome to SMF!  Glad you are here and using your Brinkman.  A dual probe thermometer like the Maverick/Ivation/RediChek 732 or 733 is money better spend than a door gauge.  You can keep track of your chamber temp and meat temp at the same time.

Have fun!
