Ok this is the deal ya'all. My father in law wants me to smoke a couple of butts for him. The challenge is this. He has no smoker and I am 3 hours away. He wants me to try it on his Webber kettle. So I will be doing 2 7#ers. How is this going to work.

I would cook them at home. Wrap in foil and towels when finished and toss in a dry cooler. or cook them ahead of time cool and reheat at there place.

To start with a kettle can be a smoker.   Not sure 2 will fit right to cook right.

I would cook at home, wrap tight then make the 3 hour drive.

It will stay plenty hot.

A Weber kettle is not a smoker. It's a grill. You can impart some smoke flavors on the things you grill by throwing on wood chips or chunks but it is not designed to be a low and slow smoker.

Butts require a smoker capable of running low and slow for up to 12 or 14 hours. Buy your Dad a WSM for fathers day and he can do up his own pulled pork. He might just enjoy the hobby!

Problem two we are heading up on Friday before. So no time to do it. And he just added to full racks to it too. This is going to be a challenge.

Not gonna pull any punches here...
At this point it's not a challenge, 2 butts and 2 rib racks on Weber Kettle, it's a Fooll's Errand.
But hey, with your nick maybe you can pull it off.

I pun therefore I am.

With a 22" or 26" Kettle, a Slow-n-Sear and much attentiveness, you could easily do one Butt or the two rib racks.
But two Butts on even a 26" would IMO be a serious challenge for even and thorough cooking.

Can you haul your smoker with you?

Just my $0.02

first off.. I'm sorry .. but I disagree with this post... Kettle's make a very good low and slow smoker using the minion method ...

This all can be done... but it won't happen in one day ... You'll have to tell your FIL that everything he wants cooked will not happen in one day... It will have to be one butt at a time... It can be done in about 6 hrs or so... hot and fast... cook at 300` and wrap when IT reaches 160` ...

Whatever you choose to do. Good luck!

It sounds like an impossible request to fulfill.

The only way I can see it getting done is smoke the butts at home & reheat at his house & smoke the ribs in the kettle.

But you will need a rib rack so you can put the coals on one side & the ribs on the other.

Probably going to have to rotate them a couple of times during the smoke.

I was thinking this was impossible. Looks like I am just gonna have to haul my big rf up there. Good thing it's on a trailer. Just pretty big to do that little bit of meat but happy fil makes a happy wife. Lol

Man he is really gonna try my skills now we are adding a 20# brisket to the mix.

I'd say the old man is trying to be sly. There just no way he could possibly think that much meat will fit in a 22 inch circle. He wants to get you to bring the big smoker without actually having to ask you to bring it. Have fun cooking and enjoy the get together.

I have to agree here. My Dad did stuff like this... Yes, all that can be done on a kettle at 325, one piece at a time. 2-3 hours for each Butt to hit 150. Foil then oven finish. Same for the Brisket. The Ribs will take 2 hour each to bite tender, another hour in foil for FOB. That's 13 hours on the Kettle and another 5 or so in the oven...JJ

No I asked. Lol. When ever he comes to see us he always ask what I am going to smoke for him. I believe the only thing I have not made for him is brisket.

Like I said just gonna take the big rf up there. Will be a good test of my welding skills[emoji]128578[/emoji]
