After lurking here for many months to research I finally bought my first smoker this weekend. I found an open box Masterbuild Vertical Charcaol Smoker for a price too good to pass up. I have purchased a wok to use as a charcoal pan, a thermometer to replace the stock one and will seal the doors with BGE felt depending on how it heats up.

Set up:

If anyone has one of these of the Charbroil equivalent I would love input input on your set up?

Seasoning:

Does any one have any seasoning tricks? I have oil(olive, sunflower and coconut), cooking spray and even some bacon grease what seems to work best?

First Smoke:

What is a good meat to start out with? I'd like something cheap and forgiving that I can cook for about 6 hours.

Heat:

I was given a bag of Royal Oak lump charcoal and have some pear and cherry chunks from so limbs I cut a few months ago so that will get me started. Any recommendations after that?

Welcome to SMF!

I'm not familiar with your smoker, but there are a lot of guys on here with them,

Hopefully one will be along soon to answer your questions!

Welcome and you are in some great smoking/BBQ country in NC.  Had the best ever pulled pork in Ashville after visiting the Biltmore house.  I have tried to recreate pulled pork that good but just have not gotten there. Will keep trying though!!!

Welcome from SC. It's good to have you on this great site. There are some really fine folks here who are always eager to share their ideas, recipes and tips. All you have to do is ask away and keep reading. Chapel Hill is a great place. I spent a lot of my parents money there about 50 years ago. Most of it was in a pool hall in Carboro. LOL.

Good luck and good smoking, Joe. :grilling_smilie:
