Hello, my name is Brandan and I am attempting to build a reverse flow horizontal smoker. I have a question about the opening from the Fire Box to the Cook Chamber. My cook chamber is 18 inch diameter x 48 inches long with a square fire box 16 x 16 (not built yet). I pulled my dimensions from one of the calculator available on the internet. The calculators indicate that my opening from FB to CC should be about 32 square inches (half moon). I found another calculator that will help you get the area of a half moon, according to that web site my half moon should be about 8 inches across and 1 inch high. Is this correct? that seems like and awfully small opening. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Brandan

Shyzabrau, is that for a half moon? (13.9 x 3.3) that seems more reasonable and close to what I got when I just drew one inch squares in a half moon shape. Thank you for your help. Another question I have is: if I make an angled baffle with a grease bar, do I mount the bottom of the grease bar and the top of my opening?

Thank you again.

Yeah. That's a half moon per the linked calculator and the numbers that you gave. Remember, of course, that you need to use the ID not the OD to calculate volumes and associated dimensions!

I can't answer your second question as I'm just starting to read about reverse flow smokers and have more questions than answers at this point!

Hey Brandan,

Hey Brandan,

Based off a 3d model I drew using your 1 inch by 8in dimension. It is indicating a 17in diameter and the area for that 8x1 would be 5.399in^2. If you were to stick with that 17in diameter the new height you would need to get 32in^2 would be as below and it give an an opening of 33.685in^2

So the opening would be roughly wide13-3/4 by 3-1/2 tall

Hopefully that helps

Use this calculator and run your numbers again. The guys here put it together and I think its going to give you the best smoker.

I had a ton of questions when I started my build and didn't make any cuts until I had a good understanding of what I was about to do. The guys here will help out, just ask. My build is also a 250.
