Hello my name is Mike and I live in Ontario, Canada.  I have been smoking meat on my Webber gas BBQ for about 6 years.  While I find it works well, I want to be able to cook larger amounts then will fit and also challenge myself with offset smoking.  I have decided that those available in stores here are very low quality so I've decided to build my own.  When I say those available in stores are low quality I refer to the metals themselves.  They are all very thin and with the various seasons (temperatures) we get here I want something heavier gauge to retain the heat for cooking. My gas grill struggles at times to maintain temperature although most will not try to cook year round.

I've managed to pick up a 50 gallon (5 feet by 16 inches) air compressor tank that seems to be 3/16 to a 1/4 thickness.  I'll know for sure once I cut the opening for the door.  However I'm confident as the tank must weigh over 150 lbs.

Any advice or suggestions will be appreciated.  My intention is to make this a reverse flow/offset likely with the ability to have water in the drip tray.

Thank you for the welcoming messages.  I have been enjoying numerous sections of this site today.  I have already learned a great deal of information to use in my build.  Gary's ratios for reverse flow smokers calculator in particular.

Once the weekend is here I plan to get back to cleaning the outside of my tank and taking more accurate measurements.  Once done I will post some pictures and thoughts on the build, in hopes of some getting members insights and advice.

Summer will be here before long and I'm already dreaming of long days tending to my cooks and evenings enjoying the results with friends and family.
