Hi folks, I'm Tim Montoya I live in central New Mexico I've recently fabricated a Meat Smoker when I was in school for welding last year. It started out that I wanted to learn how to do roll-outs, so I decided to make something practical so I decide to fab a smoker also something to help offset the cost of tools and school.

I've attached pictures of the completed unit feel free to add input (good bad or ugly). I'm also here to learn a thing or two about smoking as well.

Welcome to SMF!

It's hard to tell in the photo's how the firebox is attached to the smoke chamber.

In the first photo it looks like just a small piece of pipe for the heat & smoke to travel through.

Have you tried this out?

Just wondering how you would get enough heat thru that little pipe.

Do you have a view of the inside of the fire box & the hole to the smoke chamber?

At any rate it sure looks like a nice build!

Al

Thank you Al,

I think I know what you're getting at with the inlet. a couple of gentlemen on a Facebook welding group pointed out that the inlet was too small, it is a rectangle that is 1.5" x 8.5" I believe 4 inches long.

So with that in mind I went ahead and "burned it in" to see if that small of and inlet would restrict heat, the chamber heats up to 350 degrees. Also it would be a good chance to heat up and scrub out any oils from building like drilling.

Speaking of cleaning I've having a little trouble cleaning below the heat deflector because I welded it to the chamber. The chamber is 20" in diameter by 3 feet long does it need a heat deflector?

I will post more detailed pictures of the heat deflector when I head out to the shop.

Welcome to SMF!  That is a nice looking build!  I want to hear how it works.  It looks like you've got the skills to modify if needed.  Good to have you here.

Mike

Thank you Mike, I definately need to modify it a bit.

It heats up nicely even though the inlet is small. However being that I did my best designing functionality that I've overlooked designing it to be cleaned.

Here's a couple of pictures why:

The heat deflector is welded to the smoking chamber and it runs the whole length. I welded it because I was worried about the deflector warping.

UPDATE

I got referred to a smoker mods website, and I saw their heat deflectors/baffles. I noticed that they were bolt on.

What I did was cut the welds, cut the baffle in half and made it bolt on so that it can be removed and can completely be cleaned from now on.

I hope that cutting it in half is not going to mess with the heat distribution within the chamber.

Input is welcomed
