Hi,

I have a question regarding using fruit wood (apple, cherry, etc) from orchards that are being removed to plant new trees, is it safe to use the wood from these trees, they get sprayed with several kinds of spays (pesticide spays of different kinds, thinner sprays to cause them to drop some flowers, anti-fungus sprays and who knows what else) during the year when they were being used for fruit production.

Is it safe to use this wood or do I need to remove all the bark or what do I need to do or is it even safe to use at all?

Thank You

Michael Grace

I never use orchard wood because of the sprays. others may have different opinion but i wont risk it myself.

Hope this helps,

Do you eat apples that come from orchards?
Hold your cards, folks, as I believe Jake just won the Internet today....

Ha
I have a pest control business so this type of question is common amongst people. Without being completely blunt I always try to explain what I'm using and why and how it works and affects people and animals so as to reassure people that they are safe. My main response to the next question when they say "well it's still chemical you're using" is that I'm around this stuff 5 days a week for anywhere from 3-15 jobs a day and it doesn't affect me. My next response is that if the product wasn't safe for humans and animals and the environment, it wouldn't be labeled for use in the places it is applied. In dealing with pesticides, insecticides, and herbicides, LABEL IS THE LAW!

Reminds me of this:

My wife saw on a Facebook sale thing a guy near me had 2 apple trees and a pear tree he wanted gone to build a shop. Had to cut them down and do all the work but now I got plenty of apple and quite a bit of pear wood!
Just need to split it and let it dry now
All in all a good day!

Very nice score, Jake.  I need to go hit up some of the cherry orchards around me now that we're thawing out.

Yeah I was glad I got it. The guy posted it about a week ago and said he had people knocking down his door wanting it but didn't have the time or the tools to cut it down. Only stipulation I had to do was clean up my mess.
I'd love to get ahold of some cherry. I've never gotten to use or taste food with it
