My father in law has a lot of oak and cherry wood piled up in his shed. Has been stored high and dry for awhile so should burn pretty easy.

Thinking instead  of using lump charcoal and wood chunks, use charcoal to start the fire and then go nothing but wood logs the rest of the way.

Anybody got any tips? Pros/Cons? Suggestions?

Using a chargriller with a side fire box. Mainly used to smoke pulled pork, ribs and butterflied whole chickens.

That is what I do with my RF  I'll get started with a little charcoal (Most of the time) then just use splits for

for the rest of my cook.

Same as the above, once I have a coal bed it't all wood splits.

I used to use a weed burner to start the coal bed with splits, but where I'm at wood is more expensive than charcoal.

So I make the coal bed with 1 chimney of charcoal then just add a split every 45 minutes to an hour.

I have the chargriller offset as well and all i use is wood start to finish. I start with maple sticks and oak splits (I can make it rhyme anytime) and then just before I'm ready for meat I put on my wood I'm using for the smoke. Never had an issues.

Same as many above.... charcoal in chimney to start and add wood throughout the cook

Use all wood start to finish. I feel I get up to temp faster with all wood.Flames give off more heat than coals, plus I'm building a good coal bed without using charcoal.

I found i had difficulty with starting with charcoal because the chimney wouldn't pour into my firebox well without spilling hot coals everywhere so i bought a charcoal basket for my firebox. now i put a couple splits in my basket and pour hot coals onto it. and then all wood from then on.

here are some pics

I got mine on amazon.

A basket is a must for a firebox! I was lucky enough to have something made up in our shop with scrap expanded steel.
