Hey guys new to the forum. Love drinking beer and tinkering in the garage, after chopping up an old gas water heater for a metal foundry project I was left with a cylinder that I had no clue what to do with..

A few beers and youtube videos later I started building my first smoker.

Burnt it out a few days ago. The plan is to weld some additional tabs inside to hold the somewhat flimsy oven racks I'm going to be using and also weld a small bracket/arm off one side to hold a digital thermometer.  Coat of bbq paint on the outside after a quick sand and wipe down and I think I will be ready to season it and give it a test run.

Please critique as you see fit! ill be updating within the next few days.

Nick it looks good! Do you know what kind of metal that is?

Richie

I don't know for sure what type of metal it is but I know it's almost double the thickness of a standard 55g drum. It welds nice so I want so assume it's just mild steel but I can't be certain. Think I should be concerned??

Thanks for the kind words guys!

If it is Galvanized it would be no good.Galvanize puts off fumes that could poison the meat.

The external diameter of the cylinder is 18". After a little research it says that the metal is iron and will sometimes have an internal coating, which mine did not! (Even better)
