I'm in the process of putting my first block smoker together. I'm trying to do it as least expensive as possible. I'm trying to figure out what the best type of lid for the cooking area could be used. Also what is the best way of installing a damper on a Terra cotta liner from the firebox?

Can't help you with the build, as I'm not a builder.

But it sure looks like a great project!

Good evening!

I highly recommend lining it with firebrick.  They don't absorb moisture like block do.  Just an idea.  The more moisture there is in the smoker, the longer it take to come up to temp.

Damper in the flue.   I did a steel one on mine.   I don't recommend it.   Steal and brick added with heat don't mix.  At normal operating temp it isn't an issue, but if you ever run your smoker up to 500F plus,  it'll crack something ever time, trust me.

Jim, one of our brick builder built a top damper.   I don't know all the details, but it looks a work great.   If you happens by, he'll be more then glad to give you advice.

Looks like a awesome project.  Can't wait to see it in progress!

So I should line the firebox with firebrick? I'm trying to get my hands on some old red brick from a chimney or fireplace to build the firebox. Then I was planning on using a Terra cotta flue to feed the smoking/cooking area.

Hi Mike!  I'm new as well.  I also suggest lining the fire box with firebrick.  It's pretty cheap and is the best way to build it.
