I just bought a smoke hollow propane smoker and was wondering if anyone ever tried smoking only using charcoal and wood chips but no propane?

This may sound stupid, but why would you buy a propane smoker if you wanted to use charcoal?

I don't know how or where you would build a fire in a propane smoker.

I would just use it as it was intended, then when you can, add a charcoal smoker to your arsenal.

I have more than one smoker & so do many of the folks on here.

Some folks have used the AMNPS smoke generator to add smoke to their grills...    When smoking, remember to add cure #1 to the meat at recommended rates...

Sorry the old Fire Chief in me says not to do it. It was not built for woodburning and I doubt it was tested that way. You could get hurt or do damage to the smoker and the area around it

I would tend do agree.  The firebox may be designed to only handle the heat of the propane flame, which if operating correctly would never touch the sides of the firebox.  A charcoal/wood fire is not as predictable.  Open that door on a windy day and you can get flames in places they were not intended to be.
