New denizen of SMF, although I've been lurking hereabouts for a few months now.

I've been smoking for about 8 years using my Char-Broil grill.  It does a passable job on short smokes with a little added ingenuity, but even then you need to stay on top of it nearly continuously. Therefore, I've lately decided to buy an electric smoker and leave the grill to dedicated grilling duty.

I'm looking at 40" units. Started out shopping the Char-Broil smokers, but I am now starting to lean towards the MES units. While I am open to Bluetooth units, they are not a priority for me and it would not at all break my heart if I got something that wasn't equipped with it.  An RF remote is plenty for my situation.  And I know that I DON'T really want any of the wi-fi boxes (e.g. the Char-Broil's)

The Landmann 40" unit looked interesting...but they've been discontinued.

My list toppers at present are the:

MES 20075315  ( http://masterbuilt.com/product/20075315-40-digital-electric-smoker-2/  )

and the MES 20070311  ( http://masterbuilt.com/product/20070311-40-digital-electric-smoker/  )

Other then the cosmetics on top, what is the difference between these two units?  Which one is preferable?

The MES 40" bluetooth is a possibility, but as I said, I am not dying for bluetooth connectivity.  Just not something I specifically have a need for.

Also, does anyone know anything about the Smoke Hollow Smoke Tronix Electric Smoker.  Looks interesting but I cannot find very much about it and I don't really want to roll $450 dice.

Many thanks,

20070311 is a gen 1 digital. All stainless, tried and true, thousands in use. The other is one version of the gen2, painted black, that had many issues. O those two, go with the 0311...JJ

I had a smoke hollow loved it smoked very well could hold temp even I just out grew it and built a big electric smoker

Many thanks!

Other than the obvious cosmetics, what was the difference supposed to be between the Gen 1 and Gen 2?  And what sort of troubles does the newer unit have?

Not to beat a dead horse here, I just want to be sure that I understand....

the smoke hollow you used to have...was it the same unit?  (the "Smoke Tronix'?  ....what a name....) or was it a different Smoke Hollow?  If it is this unit...what gripes if any did you have about it?  Any smoke leakage (i.e. around the door, etc)

And how well insulated is the cabinet itself? (there are occasional small ones around here who might get burnt touching the wrong things....which they do, a lot!)

I like the burner arrangement plus the fact that it is about the highest wattage of all the units I've checked out to date.
