Hi guys

My smoker is arriving for Christmas and I am rather excited so went meat shopping,

I wanted to start with some ribs and some pulled pork. For some reason I had it in my head that I needed pork shoulder for pulled pork so got a large cut of that. Reading this forum it seems I should have probably picked a pork butt ?

Can I still make pulled pork with the shoulder in the same way as if it was a butt ? If so should i remove the fat or leave this till after smoking ?

If not for pulled pork I presume i can just smoke and slice the shoulder?

Thanks!

Pork shoulder is butt. Rub it down, fat side up in smoker and pull it at 200 degrees. Your on the right path.

However, be aware that a butt (shoulder) takes a LONG time to get to 200° internally.  I'm talking 10-16 hours depending on pit temp, size of the butt, and the meat's attitude at the time...  It can't be cooked to time, so plan accordingly.
