I have read not such great reviews about the 735's bluetooth capabilities but the probes themselves are what really interest me. I have read that you can use them with the 733 units so thats what I was hoping to do.  I was wondering if anyone put the waterproof claim to the test.  I was wondering because I would love to use these when finish smoked sausage in a warm water bath.    Thanks for your input!

Hey Chris,

There's a guy on here who makes probes.

Right now he only makes them for BBQ Guru units.

They are more accurate than the original probes & half the price.

I have been trying to get him to make Mav probes, but at this time he is not making them.

But he could answer your questions, because he has reverse engineered the Mav probes.

His screen name is "mmmbbq1".

I'm going to PM him and ask him to comment on this.

Thanks so much Al!  The probes are a little pricey but it would be worth it for me to invest if it truly is waterproof as I do a lot of sausage.

Hey Chris,

The Maverick probes are a bit tricky and have components on the inside that are hard to source, unless of course you buy 1000 of them at a time....

I'm trying to get manufacturers to cut me a break, but they have very little interest in selling small quantities at a time for a decent price. It doens't make sense for me to get the sensor for $4 a pop + import charges [Taiwanese manufacturer] for these items.

In addition to the sensor, the lead wire is very sturdy and equally as expensive. It's a shame that Maverick had to manufacture their items the way they did, since the components are of good quality, but the construction of the item leaves much room for improvement.

BBQ Guru on the other hand is a much simpler design and uses off the shelf components that are easy to source from USA manufacturers.

I will keep up my search though.... because if I can get the components I am confident I can make a bulletproof item.

I almost thought about starting a Kickstarter campaign lol.... since it seems enough people are having trouble with the Maverick probes and are STILL looking for answers years later...

And thanks for the mention Al, I appreciate it. I got my email all fixed now so I'll be getting SMF notifications again. :)

Yeah, it seems that Maverick probes have given people issues for a while.  Are any of the BBQ guru probes that you make waterproof?  That is ultimately what I am looking for.

Yes they are waterproof - the steel probe is fully sealed with an encapsulant designed to bond to the Teflon wires.

They are however, not compatible with the Maverick controllers.

Listed up on ebay under "BBQ Guru Probe ver 2", or you can PM me for direct sale if you just want to use Paypal and skip eBay. Let me know you are from the SMF and I'll discount the price a bit.

SmokinAl has used some and can vouch for their accuracy, however he did admittedly have some problems with my version 1 items where the meat probe jacket started to pull back from the back of the steel tube. Some other users have also noticed it, and I'm not 100% sure if it was just a bad section of wire or possibly the speed at which the wires were heated / cooled, however the version 2 items remedy that with a new wire that will not move around.

The pit probes were unaffected due to their different construction.

And hey - who is interested in that kickstarter???? :)

I am definitely interested in these probes.  What is the base unit they are compatible with.  I would consider buying it if I knew they probes were 100% waterproof.  Are these for the same BBQ Guru's that are temp control fans?

OK, are these probes the std probes listed on his web site?  I want waterproof probes.

Thanks
