Thinking on getting a WSM 14". Anyone done any easy mods to them yet.

TY

I haven't made a mod yet. Runs like a tiop out of the box.

I do not like the charcoal rings that Weber uses. I plan to make a charcoal basket like the ones I make for the Mini-WSM out of expanded metal. One piece side and bottom.

The charcoal ring in the WSM's just sits on a grate. Makes it hard to shake ash and reuse the unspent fuel. Also the bottom grate holes are bigger than expanded metal. So you don't hat a full burn.

For now that's all I would do. The water bowl is a bit deep and could interfere if you overload the charcoal ring for longer cooks.

No mods here either.

Mine has only been used a few times, but ran just fine right out of the box.

I may be able to save you some $.

You can have mine for $100. If your interested.

I can bring it to the gathering, or you can stop by the house when you come down & pick it up.

I also have an 18.5 for sale for $150.

I'm going to use my CC for the purchase at wally, Found them local they have 6 of them reduced for $85

TY though.

If you are going for a WSM is the 14" going to  be big enough? It looks mighty small.
Wade

I had an 18" WSM, worked great but just way to big for our RV life. The 14 looks good as its just me and wife. Was close to getting a Rec Tec mini but after looking at my 5th wheel storage i have no room with all my sausage boxes taking 90% of the storage bay space. After this hurricane we had to deal with a RAM 3500 is being close to a purchase, 3500 is needed as we are 18k lbs

As is expected don't trust the therm in the lid. Mine is off by 20-30 degrees. Which being so close to the upper rack isn't good. When I clipped one of my (tested accurate) probes at the same level as the stock probe and placed another tested probe at the upper grate level they were within 5 degrees. The stock therm was 25 degrees lower than the probe at the same level.

Yup

Thats how my 18" was.

On the 14 i'm going with a new dial, the local Academy sports has a nice one for $35

I use a thermometer thru the holder in the side of mine. Bought a 10 dollar Weber electronic one and it definitely is off by 20 degrees from the lid. My 14 does all I need it to do... besides a whole brisket but that's what the pellet is for.

Hmmm...... Any chance you are ever up near Central Illinois (or IL in general)?

Hi Al, Are these still for sale? I see the 14 is essentially new and with no mods, what about the 18.5?

Same thing on the 18.5.

Used very little, I added handles on the center section & a better lid therm.

I also have a port that you can put in for a BBQ Guru.

I took four small SS hose clamps and attached the ring to the charcoal grate, now the ring and grate are one piece like a charcoal basket, easy to pickup and shake out.

I take it then you are not ever up near Central Illinois, or Illinois in general?  If so, I was interested in buying and making arrangements to meet and pickup

No sorry, I haven't left Florida in years.

Perfect time to drive down here for a vacation.

Pick up the WSM & stay at the beach for a few days.

The weather is beautiful right now.

If your still interested I can bring it to the gathering.

I'm bringing the 14 for Rick, and I can put the 18 in the truck too.

Let me know.

Stopped at our wally world here - WSM 14.5's for $139. Took one home. Wanted something for smaller cooks and to take camping. Still got the UDS for the big stuff. Waiting for the gasket kit to get here to season it up. Can't wait to give it a try.

Was mainly interested in the 14 as an upgrade to my home-made mini as it is getting beat up from traveling so much but was considering making an offer on both for the rare occasion I cook for a crowd. Since you promised the 14 to Rick I will probably grab one from walmart while they are down to $139. If you have room to bring the 18 along for me to check out that would be fine. If it would be easier perhaps I can stop by on my way to the gathering? I hope to be arriving around lunch time or shortly after on Friday coming in via I4 to US27 south to sebring.
