Smokers?

Thread Starter
I want to buy my husband a smoker for his birthday, but have no idea which ones would be best for our use.

Most likely we will only use it occasionally and since we are not a large family, we won't need to smoke huge amounts.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions or advice.

Thank so much!

Well more info would be very helpful. Your budget, electric, gas and then my favorite is charcoal.

Me, I love my 18.5 weber smokey mountain. Feeds my family of 4 very easy for the last 3 or so years.I also recently got the 22.5 for larger family gatherings.

I'm sure you will get plenty of other recommendations but try and give us a little more info.

Also welcome to the forum's!!!!

Hello Lisa, welcome to you, and we hope later, your husband.

Please tell us a little more about your family size, is your husband

the kind of guy who will want to tinker with a fire.

Or is he the kind that wants to set it up,sit back have a beer and watch it cook.

We will be happy to help you, just need to know more before we can

Welcome aboard Lisa!

A Weber Smokey Mountain (WSM) is a perfect smoker to start with.

If you can afford it I would go with the 22.5. $400.

It's big enough for what you need & will last for many years.

They are very easy to use & hold even temps for a long time without fooling with them.

They also produce some great BBQ!

Welcome Lisa A,

There are so many options for smokers and it all depends on your budget. I started with a $150 propane and turned out great food. I also smoke food on a charcoal weber 22" grill that turned out awesome ribs, chicken and pork butt. I have also used a cheapo electric smoker and it turned out decent pork butt as well. Propane and Electric take less monkeying around, but cooking on charcoal and producing good tasting meat gives me more satisfaction.

I would HIGHLY recommend buying him a digital thermometer along with the smoker. This has been a life saver for me and many others. The dial thermometer that will come on any smoker you buy is going to be off 20+_ degrees. Maintaining temps and taking food off at the correct temps will be more important than what smoker you buy.

If he already has a nice grill, you may want to consider the A-Maze-N Pellet smoker. This will simply add smoke to your grill.

^^ This thermometer has 2 probes. One for the food and one for the smoking chamber. You can set your highs and lows on both and it will let you know when the temps rise or drops. It's also wireless, so he could be watching his temps while inside folding laundry or doing the dishes!

Hope this helps!
