Masterbuilt, NOT!!!

Thread Starter

I'm on my second 30" Masterbuilt Smoker in 3 years and today after injecting and applying rub to my beautiful beef chuck.  I put it on …………………….and nothing.  No heat.  That’s it, I can’t take it anymore.  You would have thought that after 45 years of life I would have figured out that you get what you pay for.  This unit didn’t even last 7 months.

Any recommendations from the knowledgeable forum members?  One stipulation, it must be electric and actually work for more then a year or two.  Is there such a unit?  Here's a crazy idea and have a weather proof unit?

Thanks

Eric

Hmmm, My first MES 30 lasted me 2 years, and the guy I sold it to has it for 4 years.

My First MES 40 is 7 years old & still works fine (replaced one 70 cent connector during 5th year).

And my newest MES 40 is 2 years old and works Fantastic.

Mine never get wet---Water doesn't mix with electric.

Maybe you just need to replace a corroded connector.

Sounds worthwhile checking the Coil Connections. I too have a 4 and 6 year old MES40. Lots of guys rave about their Smokin-It electrics. Bulletproof with the analog control and the PID versions are gaining popularity. They cost a few hundred more but may be what you are looking for...JJ

Eric - Check out Smokin-it and Cookshack.  I have used both.  And while I smoke under a covered patio, there are many times when wind blown rain comes in sideways.  Never had a problem.  Some folks with a unit from SI have fashioned a controller cover out of an inexpensive plastic bread box.

How cold was it there when you turned it on. I have heard that it the ambient is too low that you have to warm the units up before you use it because they wont come on if its too low.

If I was you id go with a Pellet Pooper like the Green Mountain Grill, Rec Tec, or Louisiana

I've had my MES 30 Gen 1 for almost five years. Just needed to replace the controller a couple of months ago. It's been a great investment. When I need to replace it I might go with one of the MES 2.5 models. But I also agree with Sarge. If I had the bucks to spend I'd be looking at a Cookshack or a Smokin-It.
